Juggling Balls Simplifies Overwhelm Management

In my coaching, I've found that using metaphors and storytelling can make complex concepts more relatable and memorable. One example that stands out was when I was coaching a client who was struggling with overwhelm from trying to manage multiple projects at once. Instead of giving them a list of time management techniques, I used the metaphor of "juggling balls". I explained that, much like a juggler, they were trying to keep too many balls in the air and inevitably, a few were bound to drop.

I then walked them through the idea of prioritizing which balls to focus on, letting go of those that weren't essential in that moment, and acknowledging that it's okay to drop a ball if you're not ready to catch it. The metaphor helped them see that their overwhelm wasn't a personal failure, but simply a result of trying to do everything at once.

This approach was impactful because it allowed my client to see their situation through a new lens, and simplified a complex challenge into something more understandable and actionable. The metaphor reduced the pressure they felt, making them feel more in control and empowered to take action in a more focused way. By relating a personal experience to a shared story, I helped them connect emotionally with the lesson, which made it stick far better than traditional advice would have.

I'll often say something like, "Your role, your brand, or your business is a garden. You don't plant once and walk away—you water it, you prune it, you pull weeds, and sometimes you have to replant entirely when the soil's not right." That metaphor helps shift the mindset from expecting immediate results to embracing ongoing, intentional care. It's a subtle but powerful reframing, especially for those feeling impatient or overwhelmed by slow progress.

One moment that stands out was with a rising manager who felt stuck—she believed she had hit a plateau because her team wasn't responding to her leadership style the way they used to. Rather than jumping into a checklist of tactics, I asked her to think about how she'd tend a garden if one part was thriving and another was wilting. Suddenly, we weren't talking about performance reviews—we were talking about light, attention, timing, and patience. That clicked. She started approaching each team member with a different lens, recognizing what kind of support they needed to grow individually. Within a few months, the shift in team dynamics was real and measurable.

What makes storytelling and metaphors so impactful is that they break down complexity. People don't always remember advice word for word, but they remember a story or an image. It gives them something to revisit when they're stuck again.

As a founder, I believe coaching isn't just about fixing problems—it's about empowering someone to see things differently. When they shift how they see, they shift how they act. That's the real power of a good metaphor.

One example I often use in coaching is the metaphor of gardening to explain personal growth. I tell clients that just as plants need the right environment, care, and time to flourish, so do our minds and habits.
