I had a client who was not good at saying no at work. The client would take on whatever other people asked and as a result was working late and hated her job. She wanted to quit her job. Upon further discussion, I learned she liked her job; she just did not know how to get out of doing the work of her co-workers. She and I did role-play to help her learn how to set boundaries without being rude and in a way that was comfortable for her. She used the learning and was promoted to Director of the company she worked for. Her boss told her she noticed a huge change in her and liked how she was saying no and setting boundaries. I contact her every few months to see how she is doing. She is doing extremely well. She loves her job and no one is trying to dump their work on her anymore. Everyone knows how to communicate. However, good communication can get you the results you need to be successful in life and diminish the stress that occurs. Fear stops people from getting to where they want to be in life. Learning how to communicate gets rid of the fear and empowers you to be seen and heard.

Transform Technical Jargon into Relatable Terms

I recall working with a brilliant software engineer who struggled to articulate his ideas to non-technical colleagues. His presentations were filled with jargon, and he often lost his audience within minutes. We started by focusing on simplifying his language, translating complex technical concepts into relatable terms. Here's what you need to know, we practiced using analogies and real-world examples to illustrate his points. In addition to this, we worked on structuring his presentations for clarity, emphasizing the key takeaways and avoiding unnecessary details.

Alternatively, a significant part of our work involved active listening. I coached him on how to truly hear what his audience was asking, rather than just waiting for his turn to speak. We practiced summarizing and paraphrasing to ensure understanding. I also encouraged him to pay attention to non-verbal cues, like body language and facial expressions, to gauge how his message was being received. Through these strategies, he transformed from a communicator who confused to one who connected. His presentations became engaging and impactful, and he was able to build stronger relationships with his colleagues. It's about more than just speaking; it's about making sure your message lands.
